The Periyar Tiger Reserve is Kerala's most popular wildlife sanctuary. Extending over an area 777 km. in size with a 26km artificial lake, the sanctuary is home to elephants, tigers, bison, wild boars, langurs and deer and a fascinating variety of other species. Evergreen and semi evergreen rainforests with the canopy at times reaching a height of 40 to 50 metres vegetate the reserve. The Periyar and Pamba rivers flow through the forest to form a large artificial lake where the animals come to drink. Community based ecotourism is the hallmark of the Periyar Tiger Reserve with programs conducted by locals who, by taking tourists along enhance the visitor experience with their intimate knowledge of the forest besides helping in protecting the park and earning a livelihood out of it. Chellarkovil, situated 11 km from Kumily, is a sleepy little village situated above the coconut groves in Cumbum to the east with its breathtaking view of the plains and cascading waterfalls that originate in the state of Kerala and drop down into the state of Tamil Nadu. The view encompasses the plains of Theni as well as Mangaladevi, the highest point in the Periyar Tiger Reserve.
