The Periyar Tiger Reserve is Kerala's most popular wildlife sanctuary. Extending over an area 777 km. in size with a 26km artificial lake, the sanctuary is home to elephants, tigers, bison, wild boars, langurs and deer and a fascinating variety of other species. Evergreen and semi evergreen rainforests with the canopy at times reaching a height of 40 to 50 metres vegetate the reserve. The Periyar and Pamba rivers flow through the forest to form a large artificial lake where the animals come to drink. Community based ecotourism is the hallmark of the Periyar Tiger Reserve with programs conducted by locals who, by taking tourists along enhance the visitor experience with their intimate knowledge of the forest besides helping in protecting the park and earning a livelihood out of it. Chellarkovil, situated 11 km from Kumily, is a sleepy little village situated above the coconut groves in Cumbum to the east with its breathtaking view of the plains and cascading waterfalls that originate in the state of Kerala and drop down into the state of Tamil Nadu. The view encompasses the plains of Theni as well as Mangaladevi, the highest point in the Periyar Tiger Reserve. Chellarkovil also has a medicinal garden and there are huts in the garden which provide a resting place for visitors.

Located in Idukki district of Kerala, Ramakalkal Medu gets its name from the impressions of the feet found on a rock surface here, which is believed to be of Rama, the incarnation of Lord Vishnu, as told in the Indian epic Ramayana. Ramakalmedu is noted for its verdant, cool hills and also for the panoramic and picturesque views of villages in the neighbouring state of Tamil Nadu to the east. On the way to Ramakalmedu, travelers can enjoy the passing view of vast scenic stretches of rubber, tea and spice plantations and the beautiful hills of Kuttikkaanam.

Parunthumpara is also called 'eagle rock' and 'Grampi' and located 30 km to the west of Kumily. A charming place with a huge rock extending along a stretch of lush grassland. From the summit of the rock guests get to view a spectacular landscape composed coffee, cardamom and tea plantations, thick forests with tribal hamlets and dozens of rivulets snaking through.

Calvary Mount is an Eco-tourism destination set amidst the high ranges of Idukki district, accessed through a path marked along and edge with 14 crosses set at regular intervals with the largest cross at the summit. Guests can trek 12km to the top or else travel part of the way by jeep. The locale offers a stunning panoramic view of the Idukki reservoir and at certain times guests can view elephants in the forests, way down in a valley below. Also a great trekking experience.
